PORTRAITS
commissioning an artwork
Having an oil painting portrait commissioned of your loved ones or family can make a beautiful gift and keepsake. Bae’s works are not just painted pictures, because she is an abstract figurative artist rather than a realist, they are stylised works of art that are emotive and provoke something deeper. All Bae’s works are painted in oil on canvas or linen using linseed oil. Artworks can be unvarnished or varnished and these options will be discussed with you upfront. If you decide you’d like a different medium such as charcoal, ink, gouache watercolour etc then simply contact the studio to find out more.
the process
There are two different ways a painting can be commissioned, but regardless of the approach, the artist will always start the artwork with a chat to understand your needs and desires first. You’ll also agree upfront on how many opportunities you’d like to have to review and provide feedback to the artist. Note that some aspects should be confirmed such as the subject/s, mood, general colour palette, and any specific details you must have in the work. While other details should be left with some flexibility so that the artist may work freely to produce the best work. Aspects such as prints and textures, exact colours and detail variation are examples of areas that should generally be left to the artist to play with.
The first option is to work from high quality photos provided by you. You’ll need to provide several images with good clear focus, lighting and quality. You’ll provide any information about the photos to help guide the composition the way you’d like it.
The second option is to have the artist conduct on-location live portrait sessions. By visiting you in your familiar surroundings, Bae can create a relaxed and inspiring environment for reference photos and sketches. This personal approach allows her to connect, discuss your vision, and ensure a truly unique and memorable portrait.
MOOD, colours AND SIZE
Your portrait is a unique piece of art, and its size and style should reflect your personal taste. Bae can help you choose the perfect combination to enhance your home or office. Feel free to share your preferences, and we'll work together to create a masterpiece.
PAYMENT & PRICING
The price of having a work commissioned depends on the subject, complexity of the painting and size. For an accurate quote please use the contact page to get in touch.
Prices don’t include shipping which can cost from £50-150 for UK destinations depending on the size of the artwork. For international shipping, please enquire separately.
Additional costs may apply for travel expenses (face to face visits for photos and reference sketches or delivering the work) and framing.
Before starting the work and after the details of the work are agreed upon, you’ll be asked to provide a 50% deposit. The remaining 50% is to be collected once the painting is completed and accepted - prior to any varnishing, framing or shipping. Any extra fees (shipping, framing) will also be payable at this time.
TIMING
Depending on the commission, it can take anywhere between 1-3 months from start to finish to deliver an unvarnished portrait but for varnished works it needs another 6-12 months to ensure the work is properly cured before the varnishing can be done.
FRAMING
If needed Studio BAE can provide advice on framing or to arrange to have a frame produced for your painting at an additional cost.
DELIVERy
The safest way to deliver a painting is in person to London and surrounding areas, but it can certainly be shipped securely in a reinforced box or a crate. All shipments are tracked and insured. Shipping and delivery incur additional fees.
