COMMISSIONING AN ARTWORK FAQ

  • All works on canvas are oil on canvas or linen. Works on paper can be done in pen, ink, gouache, marker, pastel, or charcoal.

  • First you get in touch by email and discuss what you’d like to achieve. A painting can be done from live on-location visits or from photos taken by the artist on site. You’ll want to decide the subject matter, mood, colours and size and any other details that are important to you.

Then you will be asked to sign a contract digitally and provide a 50% deposit to commence the work. Works can take anywhere between 1-3 months to complete from start to finish unvarnished but upon consultation you will be given a good idea of how many months the artist will need.

You’ll be given chances to review the work as it is being done and provide feedback. The frequency of this will be discussed beforehand and agreed upon within the contract so as to keep to schedule and plan. It’s important you’re happy with the work.

Once the work is complete you’ll be contacted with photos and asked to sign off that you are indeed happy. Once signed-off, the remaining 50% is due prior to receiving the work. This final payment will include any additional fees including framing, shipping, travel etc.

Finally, you will receive your work either by delivery in person or by shipping or courier.

  • Upfront you will discuss how often you will review and provide feedback so that you are comfortable with the whole journey. Should you change your mind outside of scope, it is always possible to discuss this with the artist. If the artist is happy to take on these changes then there will be additional costs added.

  • The artist will always hold the copyright to the work, but you can get in touch if you would like any sort of reproductions made.

  • The standard lead time for a commission is 1-3 months and a work cannot be done quicker than 1 month as the oil paints will simply still be wet. But if you need a work done in 1 month it can be done at an extra cost. Note please that it would be unvarnished. Any varnishing requires a 6-12 month period for the work to cure and unfortunately this cannot be rushed.

  • Before starting the work, a payment of 50% is required and unfortunately this is non-refundable. Once you’ve accepted the work at the end of the commission period, the remaining 50% is due and is also non-refundable at this point. There are no returns once you take possession of the art.

However, at an additional cost, adjustments can be made as long as the work is not varnished. But the extent of this would have to be discussed in consultation before it is accepted and agreed. For example you might decide you want a new small change to an object or person, which could potentially be done. Reworking the composition more dramatically or adding entire people might be too significant and unfortunately not possible.
